Module 1: Exploring a GIS Map
Exercise: Planning a Trip to San Diego

1) Open tourism.mxd
2) Activate United States data frame
3) Switch to data view and zoom into San Diego
4) Search Hotel layer for "marriott" select Marriott Hotel and Marina
5) Find and select Seaport Village from Major Attractions layer
6) Measure distance from hotel
7) Find and select San Diego Zoo and Qualcomm Stadium in Major Attractions layer
8) Identify trolley lines to selected attractions
9) Unselect all attactions/hotels except for San Diego Zoo
10) Export selection and create new layer for San Diego Zoo
11) Add to map
12) Switch to layout view and create map
13) Save as tourismMC.jpg to S drive

Module 1: Using GIS to Solve Problems
Exercise: Find Potential Sites for a Youth Center

1) Open youthcenter.mxd
2) Explore census blocks 2000 and city zones layer
3) Combine census blocks 2000 and city zones layers using Union tool
4) Save as youthcenter.gdb/zones_union
5) Verify layers were combined
6) Select by attributes LU_ABV=RES
7) Select from current selection AGE_5_17>=75
8) Turn on buildings layer
9) Select features from "Available buildings" that are within selected features in zones_Union layer
10) Export selection as youthcenter.gdb/selected_buildings
11) Add to map
12) Turn off buildings layer
13) Switch to layout view and create map
14) Save as youthcenterMC.jpg to S drive
